Calverley Grounds with bandstand

Calverley Grounds with bandstand

Following on from our afternoon watching ice-skating in Calverley Grounds, I found this old photo, when there was a bandstand, there also seem to be more trees on the slope near the hotel, formerly Mount Pleasant House. The grounds were informal gardens for the house, and remained so when it was converted to a hotel in 1837. Tunbridge Wells Borough Council bought the land in 1920, and the original lake and meadows were replaced by more formal gardens. The bandstand was built in 1924, survived wartime bombing, but was demolished in 2010 when the cost of repairs became too great.
